Chuck Yeager turned 90 in February but refuses to slow down.

?While I?m not gonna run no marathon, I still hunt and fish and fly,? says the guy who broke the speed of sound with a rocket plane in 1947.

His sight is sharp but his hearing dull, thanks to years of engine roar.

Yeager shrugs off hazards of the job, though, including the wild dive of an experimental plane in 1953: ?When I landed they took me to the hospital, but I was OK so they let me go home. But I had to drive to L.A. to give a speech at the Army and Navy Club. Got home at 2 a.m. and went to bed. That was my day. That?s the way we lived.?

Was he ever afraid? What good would that do? he asks.

You?d just ?better try and figure out what?s happening and correct it.?

? Adapted from ?Chuck Yeager, still soaring at 89,? Marco della Cava, USA Today.
