Here's The Problem With Our Economy - Business Insider

Several factors have come together to produce a frustratingly weak economy that has persisted in the U.S. for more than a decade:
  • "Globalization" has opened up a vast pool of billions of workers who work for much less than Americans. This, in turn, has resulted in companies shifting formerly middle-wage-paying jobs overseas.
  • Technology has continued to increase productivity, allowing companies to do more with fewer employees.
  • Average hourly earnings have been flat for ~50 years (after adjusting for inflation), as companies steer their wealth primarily to senior management and owners at the expense of average employees.
  • Tax policies have increasingly favored investors and high wage earners over middle-class and upper-middle-class wage-earners.
  • An obsession with "shareholder value" at the expense of other stakeholders (namely, customers and employees) has led companies to cut employee costs to the bone.

These and other factors have contributed to the most radical redistribution of wealth that the United States has ever seen. Since the late 1970s, the country's assets and income have moved steadily from "average" Americans to the richest Americans. This has created a society with more extreme wealth inequality than we have seen at any time since the 1920s.

Fairness aside, the problem with this state of affairs is that it leaves hundreds of millions of American consumers?the real engines of the economy?with little money to spend. With consumers having little money to spend, businesses suffer. As businesses suffer, they look for ways to cut costs. And this, in turn, hurts employees (consumers) even more.

One thing to keep in mind as we think about how to fix this state of affairs is that this is not an era in which everyone is suffering. Everyone is not suffering. Big companies and their owners and senior managers are not suffering. They are doing great. Big companies and their owners and senior managers, in fact, are doing better than they have done at any time in history, at least judging by the amount of profit they are producing.

It's everyone else who is getting hosed.

Now, in the current political environment, you can't make an observation like that without being pegged as an anti-business "socialist" or "communist." So, it's important to emphasize that there is nothing anti-business about this observation. I am as "pro-business" as they come. I just don't believe that great businesses exist solely to capture "profits" and steer cash into the pockets of their owners.

When a free-market economy is functioning well, as the American economy did for most of the 1950s, 1960s, 1980s, and 1990s, the benefits of the system accrue to all participants, namely:

  • Owners and senior managers
  • Customers
  • Employees
  • Society at large

When the system gets out of balance, however, the benefits begin to accrue disproportionately to one or two of of the constituencies at the expense of the others.

And that's the situation we're in now.

The benefits of our free-market capitalist system?which, by the way, is the best economic system on the planet, by a mile?are accruing disproportionately to owners, managers, and customers, at the expense of everyone else.

If we want to fix our economy, we have to fix that. Specifically, we have to persuade companies and their owners to hire more employees and share more of their immense wealth and profits with them.

Importantly, companies don't need to do this just for altruistic reasons (though no one would object if they did). If enough companies do this, they will not just help their employees. They will help their future sales growth. Because their employees and customers, the American consumers, will then have more money to spend.

The following three charts illustrate the current situation.

1) Corporate profit margins are at an all-time high. Companies are making more per dollar of sales than they ever have before. (This chart, by the way, gives the lie to the common refrain that companies are suffering from "too much regulation" and "too many taxes." Small companies may be suffering, but big ones certainly aren't).

2) Fewer Americans are working than at any time in the past three decades. One reason corporations are so profitable is that they don't employ as many Americans as they used to.

3) Wages as a percent of the economy are at an all-time low. This is both cause and effect. One reason companies are so profitable is that they're paying employees less than they ever have as a share of GDP. And that, in turn, is one reason the economy is so weak: Those "wages" are other companies' revenue.

One thing is clear: Our current system and philosophy are not sustainable.

Why not?

Because they're creating a country of a few million overlords and 300+ million serfs.

That's not what has made America a great country. It's also not what most people think America is supposed to be about. And it's not what will restore our economy to health.

$50 Million for Clean Energy, Energy & Water Efficiency via California County?s Residential PACE Program

?
In today?s lean economic times, more and more homeowners across the US are looking for ways to produce, as well as consume, clean, renewable energy, as well as boost water and energy efficiency. Municipal and state Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) programs are proving to be an efficient, effective means of enabling them to do so.

In California, Sept. 27, the Western Riverside Council of Governments (WRCOG) announced that $40 million in home energy retrofits have been financed via its HERO (Home Energy Renovation Opportunity) Program, which was launched in December 2011.

?

?

Pace of California PACE Picks Up

The pace of HERO applications and approvals has been picking up as word of the program has spread.

?The rapid expansion of the HERO Financing Program shows us that this is the right program at the right time for western Riverside County residents,? said City of Calimesa Council Member Jim Hyatt, who also chairs WRCOG. ?Homeowners are ready to make these investments, and convenient access to affordable financing encourages them to make their properties more energy and water efficient.?

Half of the $50 million in approvals have come since July alone, according to WRCOG?s press release. HERO investments totaling $325 million are forecast to create as many as 4,000 green jobs and save some 15 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) in homeowners? energy usage and associated energy bills, as well as helping the local area, region, and state conserve and better manage its water resources.

Driving Local Green Job Growth Higher

With nearly 400 local contractors registered to help homeowners apply for and carry out HERO projects, the county?s residential PACE program essentially creates ?a one-stop approach to energy efficiency upgrades for consumers.? Many are finding they gain a competitive advantage by being able to offer HERO financing assistance and project work, according to WRCOG.

?HERO financing has been a huge part of the growth my business has seen over the past few months. After years of having customers make upgrades only when absolutely necessary, I have been pleasantly surprised to see homeowners coming out of the woodwork to make the changes they have long dreamed about,? commented Synergy Companies? Glen Rusche.

?I have hired more employees since registering with HERO,? added Ameristar Windows? Michael Lewis. ?People seem to be jumping at the chance to make their homes more comfortable now that they can access affordable financing to pay for the improvements.?

Innovation in Clean Energy Finance as well as Technology

Innovation in finance as well as technology is needed to drive the US economy toward a low-carbon, sustainable-energy, and resource-efficient future. California?s been leading the way forward, and that?s the case when it comes to residential and commercial PACE programs. California recently announced the nation?s first state-wide and the nation?s largest PACE Program, one in which 14 counties and 126 cities are participating.

WRCOG?s HERO Program is based on the principles set out in AB811, ?which allows property owners to pay for permanentlay affixed energy and water efficient products and renewable energy systems over time through their property taxes.?

Municipal bonds are issued and loans made from banks participating in HERO and other PACE programs to finance residential clean energy, energy efficiency, and water efficiency projects. To repay them, homeowners agree to pay more in property taxes over varying periods of time, from 5 to 20 years, with interest payments tax deductible. The payments can be transferred if the home is sold before all payments have been made.

Significantly, the HERO Program doesn?t add to local governments? spending. Renovate America funds and manages Western Riverside?s HERO Program. It offers a ?turnkey system? that enables local governments that ?makes the financing process seamless and allows the HERO Program to run with no general fund impact.?

An Argentine abroad challenges President Kirchner over currency controls

At a Harvard University event, Argentina's President?Christina Fernandez de Kirchner responded with gusto to a question about her government's strict currency controls.

One such student, Victoria, traveled from Argentina to study English for three months in Cambridge, Mass. this fall. But she says the fact that she obtained enough US dollars to actually get here was "a miracle."

Between cash she had set aside every month and a gift from her grandfather, she had enough money for a course at Kaplan International.?The challenge, Victoria says, came from Argentina's recent currency controls.

In an attempt to keep dollars in Argentina amid a wave of capital flight,?the country's tax office in May introduced a series of hurdles for citizens wanting to travel abroad with foreign currency. The government relies on money from the central bank and nationalized pension system to pay international lenders who typically require their payments in international currency.

The Argentine currency is the peso, and just over a decade since the country?s 2001 economic meltdown, dollars are seen as more stable and thus desirable.?The lack of confidence many Argentines have in their own currency, highlighted just last year by?increased capital flight?in the lead up to Ms. Kirchner's October reelection, put those payments at risk.?

Victoria, who asked her last name not be used for fear of having trouble exchanging pesos for dollars in the future, says she filled out a form in August to purchase the US currency and was approved for $8,000 dollars. She called it a miracle because she says many people have been turned away for seemingly no reason. Her boyfriend, for example, won?t be able to visit because his request was denied. The rest of her expenses are going on her credit card.

At the Harvard event Thursday, Kirchner spoke to an audience of 100?students, faculty, and community members on topics ranging from the global recession to human rights, and answered questions from a handful of students?? including a question on currency controls.?

Her response was in keeping with her confrontational style.?

?I think Argentines travel very well,? she said, noting the nationals she has seen in places like Las Vegas, and even here, in Cambridge.??You are Argentine. You are here. So you don?t seem to have problems with dollars,? she told the Argentine graduate school student. ?You?re lucky enough to be at Harvard. Do you really think you can talk to me about currency controls?

?As president I have to take care of these reserves,? she said.

Marcia Florencia Chiaramonte, an Argentine Spanish teacher who has been working in the Boston area since before the currency controls were implemented this past spring, says she understands why the government has introduced restrictions.

Ms. Florencia says in order to make the peso stronger, the government has to stop people from using the dollar like it?s the official currency. ?The peso is our currency,? she says. ?There is a purpose to this ? the government is not being authoritarian.?

But, she acknowledges,??people don?t like that they have to explain why they are going on a trip and why they need the money.? Florencia says Argentines have to divulge how much they earn, where they are going, how long they are traveling, and the reason for their trip. ?They feel it?s an invasion,? she adds, noting that her parents recently visited and had no trouble getting dollars.

In Argentina ?there is a culture of complaining,? Florencia says. ?So people protest. They complain?. But I think most of [the president?s] policies are good for Argentina?

Mom Glen's Journal: Personal Injury Law Firm

No matter how careful you are with your life, there is always something and someone that would mess with you. Accidents and misfortunes are often part of every person?s life. Whether we like it or not, the only option we have is to accept it and be prepared when it happens. As the natural order of the universe, adversities usually happen when we least expect it. Injuries can happen wherever and whenever we are so we should be ready at all times.

Preparation should not only be limited to our very own self but also with other important things that surrounds us. It somehow pays to know somebody who is knowledgeable about legal matters. It can give us the sense of comfort if we know an important person who can help us in case we needed one just like people from BooneAndDavis.com. Reading about what they do and what they can do can give people a sigh of relief knowing that they are there to help with the personal injury claims.

The law is such a broad matter for an ordinary citizen to understand that is why Boone and Davis exist to represent people when fighting for their claims. It is the right of every individual to demand or collect damages if wrongful action has been committed against them. Personal injury claims does not only covers physical injury per se but physiological injury as well. The law was created to protect the welfare of every individual and whoever breaks the law should rightfully pay for it.

How To Hire Contractors For Home Renovations

Author (tuckerjayden). Submitted on Fri, 28 Sep 2012

Owning your own home is a great experience, but it is not without its responsibilities. Every house requires maintenance and beyond that, every house can benefit from home improvements. You need not be afraid of doing your own work on your home. With a few quick hints like the ones below, you can attack home improvement work with confidence.

?

One of the best home improvements you can do when selling your home is to replace the old and worn-out carpets. This will make the property look nice and give a great impression on potential buyers. Buyers quickly get turned off if they think that they are going to have to replace the stained and tattered carpets in every room.

?

When it comes to home improvement, be sure to promote the leaks at your house to the top of your priority list. This is important because leaks can be either dangerous, detrimental to the structure of your house, or to your pocketbook. Check all water pipes and fixtures for leaks on a regular basis. Install a CO2 detector in your house for gas leaks.

?

Windows

?

Light is a premium often overlooked in home improvement projects. There are far, far more rooms in the world that are too dim than there are rooms that are too bright. Adding more light fixtures is almost always a wise home improvement job, and often a fairly simple one. In more extensive renovation work, installing more windows accomplishes similar results.

?

When childproofing your home, do not overlook your windows as potential danger zones. Dangling cords from blinds or shades pose a strangulation hazard, and your child can fall through a wide-open window, even if there is a shade in place. Take a look at each window in your home carefully and adjust your treatments and habits according to the dangers posed by each specific window.

?

Windows And Doors

?

Windows and doors make a perfect home improvement project. You can add an indoor window box or change out your old patio doors for French doors. It is often possible to find good deals on these types of materials at the home improvement store. You won't have to spend a lot of money to make a dramatic change.

?

Hunt down drafts in your house around your windows and doors, and seal them with insulation or weather-stripping to make your home more energy-efficient. On a breezy day, hold a lit candle or a stick of burning incense around the edges of your doors and windows -- with the drapes tied back away from the edges -- to easily spot drafty areas as the flame moves or the smoke wafts.

?

Little tips like these can keep the home improvement process painless and keep homeowners from getting frustrated. Working on your house should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience; educating yourself on the subject will ensure that this is the case. When you have the proper information ahead of time, even the most complex home improvement project can be a snap.

?

Indian government tells carriers to end 3G roaming pacts, doesn't stop to explain why

India planning fresh 2G spectrum auctions for November 12th

For those of us on the outside, India's telecommunications setup can seem a little murky. While the country has 900 million mobile connections, for example, there hasn't been a valid 2G license in operation since February. Now, authorities are asking 3G carriers to suspend the practice of allowing customers to switch between different operators as they roam across the country's 22 wireless regions -- with no explanation as to why. Roaming was originally outlawed back in December, but a number of networks appealed -- a move which only seems to have postponed the final ruling until today.

G4S backs CEO over Olympic fiasco

LONDON (Reuters) - G4S stood by its chief executive Nick Buckles but said two other senior executives would go following its probe into an embarrassing Olympic contract blunder.

G4S admitted just two weeks before the London Olympics that it could not provide a promised 10,400 guards, forcing troops to step in and make up the shortfall in a contract failure that threatens the security firm's commercial relationship with the British government.

But in its review the firm said it did not uncover any "significant shortcomings" in the CEO's handling of the contract and company chairman John Connolly defended Buckles, who has been with the company for 27 years.

"He has tremendous loyalty to him from within the company and he has tremendously loyalty from within the shareholder base and those are characteristics that get earned over a long period," Connolly said in an interview with Reuters.

Buckles became the public face of the Olympic failure, taking to television and radio airwaves to apologise to the British public and twice being hauled in front of a Parliamentary Committee to explain what had happened.

His continued presence could make it more awkward for the British government, a key client of G4S, to hand the company sensitive outsourcing contracts.

Government deals account for over half of G4S's 1.8 billion pounds British revenue. The group, which operates in over 125 countries, is expected to achieve total revenue of 8 billion pounds this year.

"Our hope is that we will be looked at in the round, based on all of our credentials and not an over emphasis on the one contract that didn't go well, albeit an extremely important one," Connolly said.

    HEADS ROLL

There had been speculation Buckles would fall on his sword in an attempt to shore up the firm's damaged reputation but instead chief operating officer David Taylor-Smith and global events director Ian Horseman Sewell resigned.

"Whilst the CEO has ultimate responsibility for the company's performance, the review did not identify significant shortcomings in his performance or serious failings attributable to him in connection with the Olympic contract," G4S said.

Buckles has presided over a 76 percent rise in his company's share price since being elevated to the CEO role in 2005, and now needs to persuade the government that G4S can be trusted with upcoming contracts managing British prisons and police outsourcing deals.

"Are we surprised that Buckles hasn't gone? Frankly yes. Does it draw a line under the whole affair? I don't think it does," said Seymour Pierce analyst Kevin Lapwood.

Last week, a parliamentary committee rapped G4S on the knuckles over the contract shambles.

"It's not closure. They must waive their fee and pay compensation," tweeted Keith Vaz, who chairs the Home Affairs Committee, on Friday.

The Home Affairs Committee has called for G4S to waive its 57 million pounds management fee for the contract, while the company reiterated on Friday that it expected to make a 50 million pound loss on the contract.

Taylor-Smith was responsible for ensuring the Olympics contract was delivered on budget and on time, while Sewell was the account director who told Reuters just before the Games that the company could have delivered two events of that scale at the same time.

The company was capable of fulfilling the contract, the review found, but did not sufficiently allow for the scale and complexity of the task. It did not track its workforce effectively and failed to realise the problem until too late.

G4S said it would carry out more vigorous risk assessment in future, with greater board oversight of large contracts.

It also tasked Kim Challis with repairing relations with the government, creating a new role of CEO for UK government opportunities and outsourcing.

The group is the second largest private sector employer in the world, running operations from immigration and border control to guarding ships from pirates and cash transportation.

    Construction-America's Most Dangerous Industry

    New Source: JusticeNewsFlash.com
You would think workers? safety on a work site should be first and foremost on everyone?s agenda. Workers? safety is of the utmost importance and employers should do everything in their power to make sure that their workers? health and welfare are protected. Unfortunately, in New York, as developers and construction companies push forward with new development, construction workers? safety is often compromised in the interest of speed and frugality, and while the state has a comprehensive body of labor laws in place to protect workers, such incidents are still unfortunately too common an occurrence.

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, construction is one of the most dangerous industries nationally, accounting for over 20% of all workplace deaths in 2009. Even though Labor Law sec. 240, known as the ?Scaffold Law? is in place to protect construction site employees working at elevated heights, accidents involving falls from high places still remain a leading cause of injury and death at New York construction sites. Nationally, almost a third of the construction fatalities referenced above for 2009 involved falls from elevated heights at construction sites. As recently as this week, a construction worker who had been helping to complete the building of WTC 4 had fallen 5 to 6 feet onto a steel rebar resulting in serious injuries. This is a far too common occurrence to ignore and simply hope for the best.

Plans to reform the ?Scaffold Law? itself may create an immense challenge for injured construction workers. ?There are forces at work in the New York State Senate to put an end to the absolute liability of contractors when an accident occurs on a construction site due to the negligence of a worker. While these changes to the current law may help decrease costs for the contractor, it would severely increase the risk for the construction worker. If an on-site accident should occur, trying to figure out who is at fault can become quite complex. Injured construction workers would no longer have the comfort of knowing they will be taken care of should an injury occur on the job. Workers would need to hire legal representation in order to prove they were not the cause of the injuries in order to get the assistance they deserve. Contractors also would not be required to adhere to strict regulations regarding the safety of the construction site such as employing properly constructed scaffolding. This is a scary thought for those who put their life on the line every day in order to earn a living.

The construction industry is dangerous, where accidents are frequent and unpredictable. The current ?Scaffold Law? has not eliminated falls as the leading cause of injury and death at construction sites, and the reforms under consideration will further put construction workers in danger. These brave workers deserve to be protected by the law. Unfortunately, the rights of injured construction workers and what they are entitled to are often left open for debate.

He just got done striking out nine straight batters, starting with Sal Perez in the fourth inning and ending with Billy Butler in the seventh. Six of them were Royals hitters caught looking. ?The Tigers currently lead the Royals 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh. (Editor?s note: Detroit won, 5-4.)

Nine straight Ks breaks the record held by Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens. The major league record is ten, held by Tom Seaver. That?s some pretty heady company for a groundball pitcher like Fister.

Of course, when you?re relying on the Tigers D, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Romania to Buy 12 Second-Hand F-16 Jets :: Balkan Insight

Romania?s Supreme Defence Council, CSAT, on Thursday approved the purchase of second-hand US F-16 fighter jets in order to replace a rapidly ageing fleet.

?Romania cannot afford to buy new fighter planes, so we will opt for used ones that can be used for the following 20 years,? Prime Minister Victor Ponta said.

Media reports say Romania is seeking to pay around 600 million US dollars over the next five years for the 12 jets from Portugal. The jets will be delivered from 2016.

As a NATO member, Romania is obliged to have fighter jets that are compatible with the Atlantic Alliance's equipment.

Plans to purchase 24 F16 used planes were announced several times in recent years. In 2011, Romania said it was mulling plans to buy secondhand US F-16 fighter jets as part of a possible regional project with Croatia and Bulgaria.

Earlier, in May 2010, the Supreme Defence Council approved the payment of 1.3 billion euro to purchase 24 used F16 aircraft to replace its Soviet-made MiG-21s.

But three months later the then Prime Minister, Emil Boc, announced that Romania could not afford such aircraft as the country cut public spending, to comply with an IMF programme.

Hospital observation units could save billions in health costs, study ...

ER patients not ready for home can receive care in these units instead of being admitted as inpatients.

(HealthDay)?Wider use of hospital observation units could save the U.S. health care system billions of dollars a year, a new study indicates.

An observation unit is a space near or within the emergency department that provides an alternative to inpatient admission. The unit cares for patients, usually for a 24-hour period, who have been discharged from the emergency department but need further observation and aren't ready to safely leave the hospital.

Only about one-third of U.S. hospitals have observation units.

Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital, in Boston, analyzed national survey data and published research to determine the average cost saving per observation unit and the number of hospitals that would benefit from having such a unit.

They concluded that the average amount saved per patient could be $1,572 per visit when using an observation unit instead of inpatient admission. A hospital would save $4.6 million a year by avoiding 3,600 inpatient admissions. The U.S. health care system would save $3.1 billion a year by avoiding 2.4 million inpatient admissions.

"Wider use of observation units may play a significant role in saving cost for the health care system and future policies that are focused on doing so should include support for observation units as an alternative to short-stay inpatient admission," lead researcher Dr. Christopher Baugh, a physician in Brigham and Women's emergency department, said in a hospital news release.

Hospitals that would benefit from having an observation unit include all those with more than 50,000 emergency department visits a year, and many hospitals with 20,000 to 50,000 emergency department visits a year.

The study appears online and in the October print issue of the journal Health Affairs.

Israel's Netanyahu draws his "red line" for Iran

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? In his most detailed plea to date for global action against Iran's nuclear program, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday the world has until next summer at the latest to stop Iran before it can build a nuclear bomb.

Netanyahu flashed a diagram of a cartoon-like bomb before the U.N. General Assembly showing the progress Iran has made, saying it has already completed the first stage of uranium enrichment.

Then he pulled out a red marker and drew a line across what he said was a threshold Iran was approaching and which Israel could not tolerate ? the completion of the second stage and 90 percent of the way to the uranium enrichment needed to make an atomic bomb.

"By next spring, at most by next summer at current enrichment rates, they will have finished the medium enrichment and move on to the final stage," he said. "From there, it's only a few months, possibly a few weeks before they get enough enriched uranium for the first bomb."

Israel considers a nuclear-armed Iran to be an existential threat, citing Iranian denials of the Holocaust, its calls for Israel's destruction, its development of missiles capable of striking the Jewish state and its support for hostile Arab militant groups.

On Thursday he presented his case to the world just why a nuclear armed Iran would be a danger to many other countries as well. Casting the battle as one between modernity and the "medieval forces of radical Islam," Netanyahu said deterrence would not work against Iran as it had with the Soviet Union.

"Deterrence worked with the Soviets, because every time the Soviets faced a choice between their ideology and their survival, they chose survival," he said. But "militant jihadists behave very differently from secular Marxists. There were no Soviet suicide bombers. Yet Iran produces hordes of them."

Netanyahu has repeatedly argued that time is running out to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear power and that the threat of force must be seriously considered. Israeli leaders have issued a series of warnings in recent weeks suggesting that if Iran's uranium enrichment program continues it may soon stage a unilateral military strike. This week Iranian leaders suggested they may strike Israeli preemptively if they felt threatened, stoking fears of a regional war.

President Barack Obama has vowed to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power but has rejected Netanyahu's demands for setting an ultimatum past which the U.S. would attack. His administration has urgently sought to hold off Israeli military action, which would likely result in the U.S. being pulled into a conflict and cause region-wide mayhem on the eve of American elections. Netanyahu's 2013 Israeli deadline could be interpreted as a type of concession, but Israeli officials insisted action was still needed immediately and that in his speech Netanyahu was referring to the absolute point of no return.

Netanyahu appeared to be trying to soothe his differences with the White House when he thanked Obama's stance, adding that his own words were meant only to help achieve the common goal.

And he thanked the U.S. and other governments that have imposed sanctions which, he said, have hurt Iran's economy and curbed its oil exports but have not changed Tehran's intentions to develop the capacity to build nuclear weapons.

"I believe that faced with a clear red line, Iran will back down. This will give more time for sanctions and diplomacy to convince Iran to dismantle its nuclear weapons program altogether," the Israeli prime minister said. "Red lines don't lead to war, red lines prevent war."

Netanyahu did not detail what should be done if his "red line" was crossed, but the insinuation was clear. In perhaps his final plea before Israel felt the need to take matters into its own hands, Netanyahu pounded away at the dangers posed by Iran.

"To understand what the world would be like with a nuclear-armed Iran, just imagine the world with a nuclear-armed al-Qaida," he said. "Nothing could imperil the world more than a nuclear-armed Iran."

Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, but Israel, the U.S. and other Western allies suspect otherwise. Four rounds of U.N. sanctions have already been placed on Iran.

A U.N. report last month only reinforced Israeli fears, finding that Iran has moved more of its uranium enrichment activities into fortified bunkers deep underground where they are impervious to air attack. Enrichment is a key activity in building a bomb, though it has other uses as well, such as producing medical isotopes.

While Israel is convinced that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon, American officials believe Iran has not yet made a final decision to take the plunge and that there is still time for diplomacy.

Iran's talks with world powers over the issue have stalled, however, and Netanyahu argued Thursday that "Iran uses diplomatic negotiations as a means to buy time to advance its nuclear program."

Israel's timeline for military action is shorter than that of the United States, which has far more powerful bunker-busting bombs at its disposal, and there is great suspicion in Israel over whether in the moment of truth Obama will follow through on his pledge.

"Each day, that point is getting closer. That's why I speak today with such a sense of urgency. And that's why everyone should have a sense of urgency," Netanyahu said. "The relevant question is not when Iran will get the bomb. The relevant question is at what stage can we no longer stop Iran from getting the bomb."

Netanyahu has a history of fiery speeches about Iran before the U.N. General Assembly.

In 2009, he waved the blueprints for the Nazi death camp Auschwitz and invoked the memory of his own family members murdered by the Nazis while making his case against Iran's Holocaust denial and threats to destroy Israel. And last year, he warned about "the specter of nuclear terrorism" if Iran were not stopped.

While the bulk of Netanyahu's speech dealt with Iran, he also rebuked Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who spoke shortly before him to the U.N. General Assembly and accused Israel of ethnic cleansing for building settlements in east Jerusalem.

"We won't solve our conflict with libelous speeches at the U.N.," Netanyahu said. "We have to sit together, negotiate together and reach a mutual compromise."

Israel captured the eastern part of Jerusalem from Jordan during the 1967 Mideast War and later annexed it in a move that hasn't been recognized internationally. The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state along with the Gaza Strip and the rest of the West Bank.

In his speech, Abbas also said he had opened talks on a new bid for international recognition at the U.N.

The Palestinians will apply to the General Assembly for nonmember state status, in stark contrast to last year's failed bid to have the Security Council admit them as a full member state.

If Palestine does become a U.N. observer state, it will not have voting rights in the world body but will have international recognition as a "state." This could enhance the possibility of the Palestinians joining U.N. agencies and becoming parties to treaties including the International Court of Justice or the International Criminal Court.

Abbas insisted that the new quest for recognition was "not seeking to delegitimize Israel, but rather establish a state that should be established: Palestine."

Traditional or charter schools? Actually, they help each other, study says

Charter schools are not a silver bullet for education reform, a new report says, but applying the best practices from some charter schools to low-performing public schools may increase student achievement.

Early data show that the strategy ? applied in Houston and Denver pilot programs ? yielded ?promising? results, according to the report, titled "Learning from the Successes and Failures of Charter Schools" and released Thursday by the Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution.

The study could help improve cooperation between charter schools and traditional schools, which have often viewed each other as competitors. The debate about whether charter schools or traditional schools are more effective is a false one and misses the central point, said secretary of Education Arne Duncan at the Hamilton Project?s education forum Thursday in Washington.

RECOMMENDED: Obama vs. Romney 101: 5 differences on education

?The question isn?t: Do we need more charter schools, traditional schools, gifted schools, or magnet schools?? he said. ?We need better public schools. Kids don?t know what kind of school they go to. All they ask is, ?Do I have a good teacher?? ?

The report focuses on the work that Harvard economics professor Roland Fryer did with the Houston Independent School District (HISD) to develop a pilot program targeting nine of Houston?s lowest-performing middle and high schools in 2010-11 and 11 elementary schools in 2011-12.

Dr. Fryer, who is the faculty director of Harvard?s Education Innovations Laboratories (EdLabs), studied 35 charter schools in New York and discovered the top five practices that separate low- and high-achieving charter schools: (1) extended time at school, (2) strong administrators and teachers, (3) data-driven instruction, (4) small-group tutoring, and (5) creating a ?culture of high expectations.?

Fryer and HISD superintendent Terry Grier used grants from the US Department of Education and private funding ? together totaling $2,200 per student ? to implement the five practices. To meet those goals, the schools:

  • Extended the academic year by five days and added one hour to each day.
  • Replaced 53 percent of the teachers and all of the school principals.
  • Assessed the students every six weeks, reviewed the effectiveness of teaching methods from the data they had gathered, and set new goals.
  • Gave sixth- and ninth-graders two-on-one math instruction by full-time tutors.
  • Established a culture of high expectations by posting goals in the classrooms.
  • Dr. Grier said that fixing low-performing schools is not rocket science. ?I?ve never been to a high-performing school that didn?t have a good principal and good teachers,? Grier said at the Hamilton forum.

The report says the test scores, especially for math, increased dramatically (though it did not include the test scores). Fryer calculated that the progress in Houston was equivalent to giving the students an additional 3-1/2 months of math instruction and three weeks of reading instruction. The report shows similar progress for the pilot program in Denver, which began in 2011.

Fryer says he is optimistic that other school districts can adopt these methods and achieve similar results. But there are still barriers that Fryer sees to broader acceptance of his methods.

?The biggest challenge we have right now is: Do we have the right talent?? Fryer says. ?Do we have a big enough pool of leaders and teachers who want to do this work? It?s incredibly difficult.?

Part of that work is building cooperation between charter schools and traditional schools. Fryer?s research is helping to transform the debate about charter schools, says Steve Mancini, public affairs director for the charter school network Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP).

?He is bridging the gap between the academic ivory tower and front lines,? says Mr. Mancini. ?He takes research and makes it relevant for the neediest kids.?

KIPP?s schools already employ Fryer?s suggested practices and are working with school districts to develop programs and leadership training to introduce successful charter school elements into traditional schools this year. Mancini says this indicates a shifting in policy that is less rigid and more collaborative.

This ?cross-pollination? is breaking down the barriers and confrontation that often exist between proponents of strict charter-school methods and proponents of traditional-school methods, says Mitchell Chester, Massachusetts education commissioner.

?We want to make that impermeable wall permeable,? Commissioner Chester says. ?What lessons we can learn and share so that we can start to think about models that don?t fit neatly into one camp or another.?

What to expect in first round interviews - Fisher College of Business ...

    Hi again!

A a few weeks ago I mentioned that I would get back to you on interview updates now that the career fair rush has finally passed. After giving my elevator speech to what felt like 100 people, passing out resumes at both the Accounting and Fisher Career Fair, and applying for positions on FisherConnect, I have scheduled interviews with 3 companies. Typically, companies that recruit at Fisher have a two-three round interview process before issuing offers to qualified candidates. The first round (what I am experiencing right now) is of course the most important.

The first round is where you give your first impression, allows the recruiter to see how you handle pressure and if you would fit with the company?s personality/if you even have a full understanding of the company itself, and provides an opportunity to ask questions (you should always ask questions). The time frame for all of this is only about 30 minutes to an hour-not much time at all to make a lasting impression. In my experience, the type of questions asked in a first round interview are primarily behavioral-though this year I have been surprised at the more conversational interview structure so far. While I am of course not an expert or a pro at interviewing by any means, I think these 5 points have been helpful in my interview experience during my Undergraduate Career here at Fisher and so far in the MAcc program:

    1. Know Yourself-be prepared to describe who you are, what you hope to accomplish, and why the recruiter should hire you

    2. Know the company-understanding the company you are interviewing for seems obvious, but it is still important! I once had an interview in which the first words out of the recruiter?s mouth were ?Tell me everything you know about our company.?

    3. Prepare some behavioral style examples-I think it is helpful to keep track of leadership examples, milestones you have achieved, struggles, etc. so your mind doesn?t go completely blank in the interview room.

    4. Dress smart-another given, but still important. As an accounting student, black suit/white shirt conservatism is a must.

    5. Ask questions and follow up-Recruiters love talking about their jobs and of course remember if you follow up with them.

I know those are simple tips-but definitely a list I keep in mind during the interview process. Stay tuned for any second round interview updates! Wish me luck :-) .

Obama Outlines Efforts to Prevent 'Modern Slavery'

President Obama used a speech before the Clinton Global Initiative today to outline new steps his administration is taking to stop human trafficking, which he said "must be called by its true name, modern slavery."

The president said he does not use the term "slavery" lightly, but that there's "no denying the awful reality."

"When a man desperate for work finds himself in a factory or on a fishing boat or in a field, working, toiling for little or no pay and beaten if he tries to escape, that is slavery," he said.

"When a little girl is sold by her impoverished family - girls my daughters' age - runs away from home, or is lured by the false promise of a better life and then imprisoned in a brothel and tortured if she resists, that's slavery," he continued.

"It is barbaric and it is evil, and it has no place in a civilized world," he said.

The president highlighted his administration's efforts to help the more than 20 million victims of human trafficking around the world, saying more nations have passed and are enforcing anti-trafficking laws.

"But for all the progress that we've made, the bitter truth is that trafficking also goes on right here in the United States," he said. "As president, I directed my administration to step up our efforts, and we have? because we can't ask other nations to do what we are not doing ourselves."

Obama said the United States is devoting more resources to identifying trafficking networks and strengthening worker protections in an effort to stop exploitation.

Timed to today's speech, the president signed a new executive order intended to enhance protections against human trafficking in government contracting.

"We're making clear that American tax dollars must never, ever be used to support the trafficking of human beings. We will have zero tolerance. We mean what we say. We will enforce it," he said.

The president's speech, which came just hours after rival Mitt Romney addressed the same forum, brought him together with former president Clinton for the first time since the Democratic National Convention. Introducing the president, Clinton joked that "if you're an American citizen and you introduce the president, you're supposed to say, the president of the United States and shut up."

"I just want to make one comment about this. I want to finish that speech I started in Charlotte," he said to applause and laughter from the audience.
