Gen Xer's Care of Aging Baby Boomers

The Baby Boomer generation is made up of men and women who were born during the years between 1946 and 1964. The early baby boomers are now into their 70?s. Those on the tail end of the range are entering their 60?s. Their children are those infamous Genxers. These children were brought up during the turbulent times of the so called ?me? generation. Their Baby Boomer parents were often divorced at least once, with up to three extended families. For the first time in recent history, both parents were working parents who had little time to raise these GenX children, thus the term latch key kids. ?So how are they going to feel committed to taking care of these parents who sometimes had little time for them growing up?

The truth is that Gen X men and women are amongst the most educated and involved group in history. Many of them are married, have families, and their children are just heading off to college. These same people are also entering a stage in life where their parents are beginning to need their help. And we know that whatever type of childhood these people supposedly had, they are often concerned and involved in assisting their parents move on to other lifestyles, in our case, Assisted Living.

Over the past 10 years, we at San Clemente Villas have worked extensively with the Baby Boomer generation whilst they research and find good homes for their parents. Increasingly we see those same Baby Boomers beginning to consider San Clemente Villas for themselves. Those who were conservative in their investments are able to afford the lifestyle at an assisted living facility, understand ?the value they get for their money, and level of care they will receive at San Clemente Villas. For these Baby Boomers, one of the most important concerns is living a healthy, active life, and not becoming a burden to their children and grandchildren.

Baby Boomers faced this issue of parents who were very attached to staying in the family home. Now as they move on in life, we find that Baby Boomers are less attached to their homes than their parents were. Rather, while they are still strong and mobile, they want a life that is involved and as free of home maintenance and financial stress as possible. The Baby Boomers we have met are focused on being able to volunteer in their communities, learning new things that they didn?t have time to whilst raising a family and caring for their aging parents.

Their GenX Children therefore have an easier task to get their parents moving on to living arrangements that are conducive and a happy and healthy time in life. Remember, a facility such as ours is labeled assisted living, but we strongly encourage independence, and a healthy lifestyle. At the same time we also interact with our residents every day, and notice if their appetites are declining or the behavior changes. Providing a variety of options, great apartments, swimming pool, access to local beaches and activities has been the key to keeping our facility ranked amongst the top of the assisted living homes in Southern California.
