The ladies of "The View" unwittingly stumbled into an awkward exchange on Tuesday while discussing Lance Armstrong's reported doping confession to Oprah Winfrey.
The seven-time Tour de France champion and testicular cancer survivor taped an interview for Winfrey's OWN television network on Monday during which he reportedly admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs during his cycling career. During his cancer treatment, Armstrong had one of his testicles removed?a fact at least some on "The View" panel appeared to be unaware of while mocking a potential side-effect of his drug use.
?When you've had steroids, do your testicles shrink?? Joy Behar asked. ?Wouldn?t that be the tip-off??
?The question is, do steroids cause cancer?? Whoopi Goldberg asked. "Did he get the cancer from the steroids? That's what we need to know."
?We have to be careful to suggest that steroids cause cancer,? Barbara Walters, the supposed voice of reason, warned.
?Yeah,? Sherri Shepherd quipped. ?Stop suggesting that little testicle people are that way because of steroids.?
To be fair, Armstrong has long poked fun at his own lack of, let's say, a full package. The cafe inside Armstrong's bike shop in Austin, Texas, is called Juan Pelota?which is loosely translated as "one ball."
"In my situation, it?s easy to look at me and say, ?Oh man, dude has testicular cancer and has one ball,'" Armstrong told Texas Monthly last year. "Who f---ing cares? It hasn?t affected my life at all to have one ball. Sure, it might be a punch line for some people. But I?ve tried to take it and say, ?Let?s have fun with it.?"
Armstrong also recalled the birth of the yellow wristband.
"Nike initially made the bands years before and called them Ballers," he said. "The day they came to us and said they had an idea to ?take a Baller,? I stopped the conversation and jokingly said, ?Wait. That?s not f---ing funny.? People always laugh at that story. They?re like, ?All right, this guy is cool with it. It?s not an unspeakable thing.? S---. I?d rather be alive with one than dead with two."
