MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) ? A former school official suspected of embezzling funds from a small Vermont college is dead in an apparent suicide.
Vermont state police said Thursday former acting Southern Vermont College President James Beckwith was found dead Wednesday in his Londonderry home. Investigators say his injuries are consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Prosecutors allege Beckwith took $440,000 between October 2012 and January, using some of it to pay down two mortgages.
No criminal charges had been filed against Beckwith but the U.S. attorney's office filed a civil complaint involving his home and bank account.
Beckwith was the former chief financial officer and chief operating officer of the small liberal arts school in Bennington. He resigned Feb. 3.
Police say an autopsy is planned. No foul play is suspected.
