profit.

sites and forums to choose from that offer a variety of support to a home business owner.
The understand from others in similar situations is invaluable. You will find others who have
had comparable experiences and who will happily share ideas that they have market tested

What makes a good CIO? - Inside Outsourcing

I recently met Matt Barney from Infosys. He is the person in charge of developing leaders within Infosys.

I blogged about how he turns his executives into the rock stars of the IT services world.

Matt is a psychologist so a lot of the stuff he talked about was new to me. But I did ask him to write an article for me that describes what makes a good CIO.matt barney.jpg

Here it is: So You Want To Be a CIO...

By Matt Barney, vice president and director at Infosys Leadership Institute

"All the great corporations of the world devote substantial energy and resources making sure they groom the next generation of leaders.? But not all such efforts payoff. ?

Indeed, the scientific approach to leadership is overwhelmingly appreciated by leaders who don't want their development by witch-doctors.?? In the last 100 years, there are good, measurable methods that improve your shot to be at the top, whether you want to be a Chief Innovation Officer or variant of 'Chief Geek'.

Still, there's a twist involved with becoming the best CIO you can be. The transformation is as much style as it is substance. Consider the renowned healthcare executive Quinton Studer. He's long been known for identifying top performers in the companies he's run. He acknowledges their work with hand-written notes addressed to their homes. Although the gesture doesn't cost a lot, the tailored, surprise-filled note from the chief executive is invaluable to a star employee who relishes the recognition. Plus, he can readily share it with appreciative family members. ?

Genetic studies show that early childhood experiences have profound effects on intelligence and personality. Yet these same studies also show that 70 percent of the skills and traits it takes to be a great leader aren't hardwired; they're elements you can develop and grow yourself. This study further supports the notion that leadership is a subtle mix of art and science.? ?

It's vitally important to concentrate on three levels of developing and honing your leadership skills. The first level is to learn how to set difficult but achievable goals.? When your followers successfully achieve milestones, customize their rewards. Friend and Professor Emeritus Robert Cialdini of Arizona State University has conclusively shown that the most effective rewards are those that are meaningful, personalized, and unexpected.? Recall Quinton Studer's thank-you notes to his employees.

Next, learn how to scan the environment to understand the evolving competitive landscape - including the presence of disruptive innovations. Great leaders and their visions include ways to extract competitive advantages in ways that are difficult for competitors to copy, mimic, or substitute.? ?

Top CIOs need to know how technology and business models evolve in tandem. That way they can connect technical expertise with the creation of business value. Another aspect of a great CIO is that they're great followers. When legal, operational, or financial colleagues have superior expertise, the best CIOs follow and learn from them.

The final and most recognizable lever of leadership is charisma. Another friend, Professor John Antonakis of the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, has shown conclusively that charisma can be taught as well. The best CIOs break out of their techie shells and tell compelling stories. They use metaphors and alliteration to electrify followers in a deeply personal way.? And their charisma helps their followers stay motivated even when they're not around - and become leaders themselves. That's because they create and perpetuate a corporate culture that pervades every corner of the organisation."

Savile victims allege paedophile ring existed at BBC

LONDON (Reuters) - A sex scandal gripping BBC deepened on Wednesday with claims that a paedophile ring had existed involving some of its stars, as its former director general said his handling of the case shouldn't stop him becoming the boss of the New York Times.

The BBC has been thrown into disarray by accusations it helped cover up sexual abuse by one of its most celebrated former presenters, Jimmy Savile, and has struggled to explain why one of its own shows killed an investigation into it.

The broadcaster's current Director General George Entwistle has been condemned for his handling of one of the worst crises in the corporation's 90-year history and questions have also been raised about his predecessor Mark Thompson, who is set to take over at the New York Times Co next month.

The government warned the BBC on Wednesday that the scandal was raising "very real concerns" about public trust.

"These allegations do leave many institutions, perhaps particularly the BBC, with serious questions to answer," Prime Minister David Cameron told parliament.

Police and the BBC, which is funded by the public through an annual licence fee, are looking into allegations that the eccentric, cigar-chomping Savile, who died last year, abused young girls over six decades.

Some of the attacks were alleged to have taken place on BBC premises.

Lawyers representing some of the male and female victims, some of whom were as young as eight when the abuse occurred, said their clients had indicated an organised paedophile ring involving other celebrities had existed at the BBC during the height of Savile's fame in the 1970s and 80s.

"There is information of a possible paedophile ring and we have people who have approached us with that information," Alicia Alinia, one of the lead lawyers involved in the cases for the Slater and Gordon law firm told Reuters.

"It seems to be a number of people who were involved other than Jimmy Savile, I can't reveal any specific names of celebrities involved, but it seems as though it wasn't just limited to unknowns."

Earlier, the BBC said new allegations had been made against nine current BBC staff or contributors since revelations about Savile were first broadcast by rival channel ITV.

These ranged from inappropriate language or behaviour to harassment and serious claims of sexual assault.

"Where appropriate action needs to be taken and people would need to be suspended, that will happen," a BBC spokeswoman said.

In a sign the scandal could spread further, lawmaker Tom Watson told parliament a senior aide to an unnamed former prime minister might have been involved in a suspected paedophile ring.

"I want to ensure that the Metropolitan Police secure the evidence, re-examine it, and investigate clear intelligence suggesting a powerful paedophile network linked to parliament and Number 10 (prime minister's office)," he said.

"REAL CONCERNS"

The developments come at a time when politicians are increasingly voicing disquiet about the BBC's broader management structure.

Culture Secretary Maria Miller wrote to the broadcaster's independent governing body to say "very real concerns are being raised about public trust and confidence in the BBC".

Lawmakers and the media heavily criticised Entwistle for his unconvincing appearance before parliament on Tuesday to answer questions over the scandal.

Thompson, his predecessor, is also facing scrutiny over his handling of the case. The public editor of the New York Times openly questioned whether the Briton was now fit to serve in his new role with such a scandal hanging over him.

"I do not believe there is anything that I've done in relation to this matter which should in anyway impinge on my abilities to fully discharge the responsibilities I'll have at the New York Times," Thompson told Reuters.

He said he was not briefed on the high-profile investigative programme that was looking into allegations against Savile, who hosted prime-time children's shows on the BBC, and that he was not involved in the decision to kill its report.

Entwistle, who replaced him as BBC director general in September, told hostile lawmakers on Tuesday that failures at the corporation had allowed Savile to prey on young girls, but he too denied he had helped suppress the report.

Damian Collins, a lawmaker from the ruling Conservative Party and a member of the parliamentary committee which questioned Entwistle, said it still wanted answers.

"I don't think the director general gave a very convincing performance yesterday and I think there were a lot of questions about the decisions he's taken," he told Reuters.

In reference to Thompson, who was director general when the decision was taken to drop the investigative Newsnight programme into the subject, he said:

"I find it extraordinary that the decision to close down the Jimmy Savile investigation could have been taken without the knowledge of the director general, who is the editor-in-chief, because this was not any run-of-the-mill investigation.

"It was one of the highest importance, involving some very grave criminal allegations about someone who had been a BBC employee for decades."

Apple's Tim Cook sees Microsoft Surface as a 'fairly compromised, confusing product'

Anyone wondering what Apple CEO Tim Cook thinks of Microsoft's new Surface tablet didn't have to wait long to get an answer. Cook offered a fairly blunt assessment of the device on the company's quarterly earnings call today, saying that while he hasn't personally played with one, "we're reading that it's a fairly compromised, confusing product." He went on to say that "I think one of the things you do with a product is make hard trade-offs. The user experience on the iPad is absolutely incredible," adding, "I suppose you could design a car that flies and floats, but I don't think it would do all of those things very well. When people look at the iPad versus competitive offerings, I think they'll continue to want an iPad."

As for Apple's own new tablet, the iPad mini, Cook dismissed the notion that it would cannibalize other iPad sales. "The way that we look at this," Cook said, "is that we provide a fantastic iPod touch, an iPad, and an iPad mini. Customers will decide which one, two, three or four they want, and they'll buy those." He went on to add that "we've learned over the years not to worry about cannibalization of our products. The far bigger opportunity is the 80 to 90 million PCs shipped each quarter. I think a great number of those people would be better off buying an iPad, or a Mac. That's a bigger opportunity for Apple. Instead of looking at cannibalization, I see an incremental opportunity."

Some young greyhounds to entertain spectators in Bookmakers ...

Some young greyhounds to entertain spectators in Bookmakers Puppy

Some young greyhounds have gathered around for a competition in the Bookmakers Puppy at Henlow in England on Thursday, October 25, 2012. All of them are highly talented and will definitely entertain the spectators at the venue. The winner of the Grade OR contest will be awarded a cash prize of ?150 in the end.

There is no clear favourite for the 460 metres flat encounter, which is scheduled to start at 19:39 GMT. This will make things quite interesting, but the punters will definitely not enjoy this situation, as they might be at a risk of losing some money at the end of the day.

According to the bookmakers, the best chances of victory are with Blackrose Mia because she has been delivering solid results with consistency in this class. This will definitely put her in a very good position and the bettors will most probably risk the maximum number of bets in her favour.

Although, the young bitch made her first appearance during the ongoing season, yet she has raced in quite a few events and will not be under any pressure right now. She has been competitive on most of the occasions and her rivals should be well aware of this fact.

The E. Cantillon?s trained bitch will enter today?s contest from trap number four, which is not a very good position at all. She might get blocked by a few slower greyhounds around her, which could prove to be highly costly at the end of the day.

Almost a similar thing happened to her last time around, when she had to settle for third place in the end. She will need a clear run in order to make her team proud at Henlow today.

On the other hand, Severn Bolt will be looking to spoil the party for the favourite bitch. He has been given a general starting price of 3 to 1 and will come out attacking from trap number two.

Although, he is also not in the most ideal position, yet he has a chance to gain some momentum in the early stages of the race. He finished as a runner up in his most recent outing, which means that his confidence level will be good.

The next 100 million iPads | asymco

Having reached 100 million iPads shipped in 2.5 years the natural question is how long will it take for the next 100 million iPads?

The ramp of cumulative units shipped is shown below.

?

I also added the equivalent ramp for the iPhone. [The last data point for the iPad is based on an estimate of 16.5 million units in Q3 which may need revision depending on company reporting.]

The next 100 million will depend to a large degree on the success of the new iPad mini. To make an estimate we have to realize that there are several aspects of the tablet market which differ from the phone market and that therefore the predictive power for previous data is weak.

First, the channels are different. Tablets are sold as media consumption or ?computing? products. They are not sold as communication devices. Therefore operators have few incentives to promote and subsidize them. They do participate in the distribution but not with the same level of commitment. That means less ?push? and opportunity for discovery. Apple has an advantage in this case with their stores and brand value. The lack of operator engagement and lack of points of sale might be one reason why Android tablets have not ramped as quickly.

Second, for some competitors, the tablet itself is a loss leader and acts more as a terminal into an ecosystem rather than a product in itself. In cases where tablets are given away it?s possible that consumers might own one for each platform or ecosystem. This is similar to the game console model where the cost of the console is not a barrier to many avid gamers. This means that penetration of tablets can reach above 100% of users in some markets. Although network connections (i.e. SIM cards) can and do reach well above 100%, the number of phones in use by one person simultaneously is bounded.

Third, the lifetime of the product is as yet undetermined. Phones tend to last 2 years. This is due to evolving standards as well as high wear and tear and breakage or losses. Tablets are not as ?mobile? and are less likely to be used and the basic functionality does not evolve as rapidly. It?s possible that replacement rates for tablets will follow more that of notebook computers than phones. Perhaps between 2 and 4 years. I suspect most iPads purchased are still in use today, including the first version. There will be some obsolescence from system upgrades, but the older systems will keep going.

Some of these aspects of the product could lead to slower growth and some to faster growth. That and the fact that it?s a completely new category with business and consumer and educational and vertical applications makes it a difficult product to forecast.

Having said that, the product is extremely resonant with buyers. The growth to 100 million is testament to that. The liquidity of the product, with no carrier locking and no pricing illusions means that it reaches all parts of the world quickly. So there is no obvious upper bound on the size of population who might buy it. The new price points and form factor may lead to a wave of new adoption, similar to the impact the iPod mini had on the iPod line.

There are still many factors that can slow growth, especially production capacity, but I believe that the iPad could growth between 50% and 80% which would mean 100 million more iPads could be sold by the end of 2013.

Heli Skiing Offers Exciting Possibilities For Skiers And Snowboarders

Imagine wilderness on a mountainside where scenes of untouched fresh snow and picturesque mountain terrain stretch as far as the eye can see. Although this scene is far from traditional groomed and overcrowded ski resorts, a new option called heli skiing is offering thrill seeking skiers and snowboarders the ability to ride untouched mountain wilderness.

Heli skiing allows small groups of riders to access remote and unused sections of a mountain with the assistance of a helicopter. Usually with the assistance of a guide these riders are then dropped at a landing zone and are able to descend down the slopes. The helicopter than serves as a ski lift, brining riders quickly back up the mountain to a new descent point. This remote access allows riders to find the most desirable snow conditions possible. Most riders know that fresh winter snow creates a more relaxing and rewarding ride which can allow a more technical interaction with the surrounding landscape.

Many advanced skiers and snowboarders prefer the favorable conditions and natural settings heli skiing is able to offer. The thrill of untouched snow in a diverse mountain setting is desirable to adventure seeking riders. Ski resorts usually run out of fresh tracks by mid day while heli skiing creates the potential for endless fresh snow. Heli skiing and snowboarding also allows for a refreshing step away from the over populated and eroded slopes that define most ski resorts. Heli skiing is also a great group vacation option, as small group excursions create a more intimate and cohesive experience among the members. Groups do not have to be worry about getting separated by slow ski lifts or beginners groups.

Helicopters allow skiers and snowboarders fast access to locations that are unreachable on a ski lift. Heli skiing and snowboarding trips are considered great investments due to the greater amount of time spent riding than at a traditional ski resort. Riders get a quick and direct drop off that can go much further up a mountain with the assistance of a helicopter. The experience also becomes personalized due to direct relationships with the mountain guides and pilots. This allows skiers and snowboarders to specialize their rides by finding sections of the mountain that fit the style of ride they are looking for.

Potential heli skiers and snowboarders should plan their trips around their own desirable conditions and settings. Resorts offer a variety of options ranging from the size of the group to the length of the decent. Most companies offer a detailed examination on the type of snow and climate that will be featured on their heli skiing adventures. The overall thrill of adventure captured through heli skiing makes the experience so desirable. Picturesque landscapes surround an adrenaline filled descent through backcountry wilderness. Heli skiing offers an unrivaled experience compared to traditional mountaintop ski resorts. This will be one of the most rewarding experiences for any avid skier or snowboarder due to the endless possibilities for exploration while being surrounded by pure wintery wilderness.

Scientists target bacterial transfer of resistance genes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? The bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae -- which can cause pneumonia, meningitis, bacteremia and sepsis -- likes to share its antibiotic-defeating weaponry with its neighbors. Individual cells can pass resistance genes to one another through a process called horizontal gene transfer, or by "transformation," the uptake of DNA from the environment.

Now researchers report that they can interrupt the cascade of cellular events that allows S. pneumoniae to swap or suck up DNA. The new findings, reported in the journal PLoS ONE, advance the effort to develop a reliable method for shutting down the spread of drug resistance in bacteria.

"Within the last few decades, S. pneumoniae has developed resistance to several classes of antibiotics," said University of Illinois pathobiology professor Gee Lau, who led the study. "Importantly, it has been shown that antibiotic stress -- the use of antibiotics to treat an infection -- can actually induce the transfer of resistance genes among S. pneumoniae. Our approach inhibits resistance gene transfer in all strains of S. pneumoniae, and does so without increasing selective pressure and without increasing the likelihood that resistant strains will become dominant."

Lau and his colleagues focused on blocking a protein that, when it binds to a receptor in the bacterial cell membrane, spurs a series of events in the cell that makes the bacterium "competent" to receive new genetic material. The researchers hypothesized that interfering with this protein (called CSP) would hinder its ability to promote gene transfer.

In previous work published late last year in the journal PLoS Pathogens, Lau's team identified proteins that could be made in the lab that were structurally very similar to the CSP proteins. These artificial CSPs can dock with the membrane receptors, block the bacterial CSPs' access to the receptors and reduce bacterial competence, as well as reducing the infectious capacity of S. pneumoniae.

In the new study, the researchers fine-tuned the amino acid structure of more than a dozen artificial CSPs and tested how well they inhibited the S. pneumoniae CSPs. They also tested their ability (or, more desirably, their inability) to mimic the activity of CSPs in bacterial cells.

"The chemical properties of individual amino acids in a protein can greatly influence the protein's activity," Lau said.

The team identified several artificial CSPs that both inhibited the bacterial CSPs and reduced S. pneumoniae competence by more than 90 percent.

"This strategy will likely help us reduce the spread of antibiotic-resistance genes among S. pneumoniae and perhaps other species of streptococcus bacteria," Lau said.

The study team included researchers from Sun-Yat-Sen University in Guangdong, China. The National Institutes of Health and the University of Illinois Research Board Arnold O. Beckman Research Endowment partially supported this work.

Social media tricks every entrepreneur should know - Modern Dignity

The Rules are Changing

Just as the Internet and ecommerce changed the way that we did business back in the nineties, social media is changing the way we do ecommerce business on the web today.? From YouTube videos to twitter to real time instant messaging to LinkedIn profiles pages, customers are relying more and more on social media to shape their experience on the web.? They are also expecting companies to connect with them through these tools.? In many ways this is a time of unprecedented opportunity for companies to understand their customer?s needs immediately and experience what their customer is experiencing in order to understand them more fully and provide the best possible customer service at the same time.? Here are some tips that are vital for correctly using social media outlets to their fullest potential to the benefit of your business.

Rehumanize Yourself

Customers are tired of canned ads.? It is becoming more apparent every day that Internet users are not interested in clicking on random banner ads, and they do not respond to advertisements on the web the same way they would in traditional broadcast media forums such as television and radio.? In order to connect with customers on the social networks, you must connect with customers on a human level.? Instead of plugging links for your newest sale or ad campaign via Twitter, perhaps you could send relevant links to customer testimonials or helpful how to videos that relate to your product. ?Keep it professional, but you do not have to spend all of your time directly plugging your brand.? Showing yourself to be a human with individual interests, especially if they are relevant to your company?s brand, is vital showing the human face to your business.

Cost Efficient Research

Social media sites are excellent low cost tools for customer research.? Whether it?s researching trends on Twitter, groups in LinkedIn, or your follower demographics in Facebook, social media provides one of the lowest cost and most accurate ways to track customer interest, the latest hot trends, and customer demographics.? The interesting thing about social media is the amount of personal information that people display about themselves on their profiles.? And remember to not be stingy about your own information ? if you are going to use social media sites, it is important that you are seen as an invested community member.? Remember, others can see your profile just as you can see theirs.

Opportunities for Great Customer Service

Customer service opportunities through text chat or video chat can be a great boon to your company?s ability to service your customers.? On top of this, many customers will openly express concerns or complaints via sites like Twitter.? The great thing for you as a company is that you can address these problems directly with the customer as the problems come up.? The challenge, however, is that you do not have much of a choice about this, because if you do not address your customer?s issues right away, they tend to escalate and get passed around to the rest of the social media community with break neck speed.

Relationships with Reporters

Just as your company has a highly public face that must be managed, reporters also have a public image that they manage.? In the past there were unfortunate occurrences that happened from time to time when a reporter or other member of the media misunderstood a company?s product or intent.? With social media, while it does not stop these occurrences, it gives companies and members of the media direct access to one another, in the public arena, where they can ask questions and clear up misunderstandings better than ever before.

Myanmar: President overcomes fear to meet the press

October 23, 2012

President Thein Sein gave his first local press conference yesterday

Reformist President Thein Sein gave his first press conference to local media yesterday.

Speaking with local and international reporters in the capital Naypyidaw, Thein Sein was vague on questions on how to end Myanmar?s ethnic civil wars, dodged difficult questions about atrocities by the former military regime and said it was up to opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi whether she would take a position in government.

Appearing ?relaxed, cheerful and humble,? according to one journalist who took part in the press conference, Myanmar?s president admitted he used to fear journalists. But he added that if he could handle a grilling on the BBC?s?HardTalk?program earlier this year, he could handle anything.

?Like many government officials, I myself used to fear media. Now I have overcome it,? he said, urging other members of his administration to engage with the media.

Officials of the former military regime rarely spoke to the media in the past. [More]

Morgan's play a revelation for US

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. ? It?s very tempting to discuss how big a role the field played in Tuesday?s 2-2 draw between the United States women?s soccer team and Germany. The slick turf at Rentschler Field directly led to Germany?s first goal in the 48th minute and it nearly re-gifted the favor to Abby Wambach 11 minutes later when a through ball skipped through to put her one-on-one with German goalkeeper Nadine Angerer, but Wambach didn?t fool Angerer on the chip.

Alright, enough about the field. Even the result ? a 2-2 draw, which follows Saturday?s 1-1 draw ? is less important than what we saw play out between 18-yard boxes.

The United States looked far more comfortable on the ball on Tuesday and that is directly attributable to the team keeping the ball higher up the field. Germany sat in on Saturday and forced U.S. defenders to play out of the back, which is not a strength of this squad. That led to an opening 45 minutes that went just as planned on Saturday: long balls from the U.S. that the Germans gobbled up and turned the other way.

Tuesday, however, saw Megan Rapinoe and Shannon Boxx, in particular, find the ball far more often, in more advanced and dangerous positions.

(MORE: ?Gulati talks future of U.S. women?s soccer)

Becky Sauerbrunn?s insertion into the starting XI at center back in place of Rachel Buehler played a role in calming down the back line, which played better than the 2-2 score suggests.

Germany forward Dzsenifer Marozsan scored her first goal in the 48th minute on rain-induced mistake by Christie Rampone and Marozsan scored her second equalizer in the 85th minute on a left-footed upper-90 strike which Solo could do nothing about.

Both U.S. goals ? Wambach?s in the 44th minute and Tobin Heath?s in the 67th minute ? came from well-worked combinations in which Alex Morgan earned the assist.

So what do the U.S. women take from this match?

?The takeaway for me is that when we are played in and we?re fit, we?re a better team, obviously,? Wambach said. ?And that?s good news because that?s on the horizon for us.?

That reliance on fitness and physical play isn?t anything new ? it?s always been a staple of the U.S. and there is no reason to think that it will change soon (and as I noted in an earlier post, why fix what isn?t broken?).

But speaking of physical play, we did see yet another element of Morgan?s game come out in these two matches against Germany.

She is blazing fast, but we knew that from the start of her emergence with the national team. Then she started scoring late game-winning and game-tying goals before quickly establishing herself as a starter following the 2011 World Cup. This year her progression has been as a playmaker ? those two assists give her 18 this calendar year.

Morgan, however, has only recently added a physical element to her game. She is going to need to be as defenses around the world try to chip away at her and get under her skin. Germany did that from the opening whistle on Tuesday and Morgan was ready to push back straight from the start.

?You have to expect the physicality that the Germans bring to this game,? Morgan said. ?We?ve played them and now we know that if you take too many touches on the ball, they are going to tackle you, they are going to put some pressure on you, they are going to put a body on you.?

So, as we?ve alluded to previously, the feelings over these two draws is pretty mixed given the transitional nature of this squad. Two draws against world No. 2 Germany are nothing to scoff at (17-4-6 against Germany all-time), but interim coach Jill Ellis will now hand over the keys to the U.S. to Pia Sundhage?s permanent replacement. What comes once that change happens is anyone?s guess.

As Christie Rampone said postgame, the U.S. didn?t want to lose. Though that?s not quite the mentality you would expect from the No. 1 team in the world.

Little Bear, Sal and One Unforgettable Forgettable Day - NYTimes.com

Little Sal?s mother slowly backed away. (She was old enough to be shy of bears, even very small bears like Little Bear.) Then she turned and walked away quickly to look for Little Sal. ?Blueberries for Sal,? by Robert McCloskey

Could any picture book be more charming than ?Blueberries for Sal??

As a child, I was thrilled (and pleasantly anxious) by the account of that afternoon?s parallel adventures: ?Little Bear and Little Sal?s mother and Little Sal and Little Bear?s mother were all mixed up with each other among the blueberries on Blueberry Hill.? I loved the mothers? silly mistakes, and their worry and instant determination to find their children. And the fact that the mix-up was solved before Little Sal or Little Bear had time to be scared. I loved the sound that the berries made as they fell into Little Sal?s tin pail: ?Kuplink, kuplank, kuplunk!?

Nowadays, I also find myself studying the clothes the mother is wearing; and estimating the year the action takes place, based on the kitchen furniture; and imagining the kind of life where you go blueberry picking with your daughter and can the berries for the winter.

And I still get the same sense of comfort and security from these two timeless mothers and children, all mixed up on Blueberry Hill.

I recently read James Salter?s wonderful novel, ?Light Years,? and I was struck by his observation, of a family afternoon at the beach with a seven-year-old and a nine-year-old: ?These years are endless, but they cannot be remembered.? This line reminds me of my Secret of Adulthood, ?The days are long, but the years are short.? These small adventures are precious, because they help us to remember days that are both vivid and forgettable.

PFT: Marshall irate over Cutler hit, Suh scoffs

Cam Newton, Warren MoonAP

Few have worked as closely with Cam Newton as Warren Moon, and the Hall of Fame quarterback is still defending last year?s pupil, even while acknowledging his need to improve.

Moon thinks placing too much of the blame for the Panthers? 1-5 start (and the firing of general manager Marty Hurney) at the second-year quarterback?s feet is wrong, and any suggestion he?s a bust is ridiculous.

?I think a lot of this is because so many people want to say ?I told you so? about him, but couldn?t because he was so good last year,? Moon told Yahoo?s Mike Silver in a wide-ranging interview. ?I think people are overreacting. How can he be a bust? He just had one of the great years a rookie has ever had, and now he can?t play? Come on.?

Moon acknowledged he?d like to see Newton adopt a more even-keeled approach, something he?s done more of in recent weeks. But as he did prior to the draft?last year, Moon thinks there?s an undertone of racism to some of the criticism.

?I don?t understand it,? Moon said. ?I heard somebody compare him to Vince Young. It?s the same old crap ? it?s always a comparison of one black to another black. I get tired of it. I get tired of defending it.

?If you want to compare him to someone because of his demeanor, compare him to Jay Cutler. There are a lot of guys who whine and moan. Cam?s not biting anybody?s head off or pushing his linemen. He?s just disgruntled, and not handling losing well, because, think about it, he basically didn?t lose in college.

?I don?t think Cam?s as bad as Cutler, because Cutler looks like he doesn?t give a damn sometimes, or he?s yelling and cussing at someone. Cam, he just looks down when they?re losing.?

Moon also doesn?t think the Panthers coaches are putting Newton in good positions to succeed by ignoring the run game with the talent they have, and leaning too heavily on the read-option principles he ran in college.

?I don?t know why they got away from what they were doing last year,? Moon said. ?They were running more of a pro-style offense, and now they?re going more to the read-option, the stuff he did in college. I think some of it is coaching. I think some of it is they don?t have enough good players yet. And there?s no question he?s not playing as well as last year.

?That offense doesn?t allow you to be an NFL-type quarterback. It?s a lot of tricks, sticking the ball into a running back?s stomach, trying to freeze the defense. Even though he can do that and had success with it in college, I don?t think it serves him well in the long run. You can?t keep going back and forth. I think he?s a little bit confused with the footwork, and I think that?s one of the problems with his accuracy ? his feet are crossed up. Why this change? I think it?s backfiring. I think they?re out-thinking themselves.?

Sounds familiar.

Monday Spark: What is the worst that could happen?

scary space jumpIf Felix Baumgartner asked himself that question before jumping out of his capsule at an altitude of over 24 miles, the answer would be a little grim.

He was literally jumping out into the unknown, aware that a variety of things could go wrong at many stages of his descent.

Clearly, he and his team had worked hard to anticipate problems and risks, and to address and plan for them as best they could.

But still. It was a very risky thing to do. And the worst that could happen was?well, it was as bad as it gets.

So how about you?

Do you have plans to grow your freelance business that feel a little scary?

Do you think about approaching large companies for business, but never actually do it because of a fear of rejection?

Do you sometimes decide to increase your fees, but hold back, just in case clients say no?

Do you think about speaking to a group of business people about the services you offer, but never do it because you are scared of public speaking?

Do you have some bad, low-paying clients who you know you should fire, but you don?t because you are scared to lose the pittance they pay you?

The thing is, when you step back and look at any of these things from 30,000 feet, or 24 miles, they?re really not very scary at all.

What?s the worst that could happen?

Seriously.
